There’s a second thing we learn from our five little-known heroes in Exodus 1-2: God uses our small acts of obedience in ways we can’t foresee. We think of Moses as the great hero of the story. But if not for those five women, there would be no Moses. Shiphrah and Puah courageously defied an immoral order from their king. Jochebed did what she had to do to save her son’s life. Pharaoh’s daughter chose to raise a child from a hated race. Miriam, just a little girl at the time, took action to make sure her baby brother was nursed by her mom.
None of those things seemed heroic at the time. Ironically, we didn’t even cover the story in Exodus 2 that fits our template for heroism: The moment 40-year-old Moses kills an Egyptian who is beating a Hebrew slave. Today, we make action movies out of stories like that, but at the time, it accomplished nothing. Remove the actions of any one of these five women from the sequence of events, however, and Moses never grows up to be Israel’s deliverer.
What will be the ripple effects of your small act of obedience be today?
Maybe you choose to show kindness to a co-worker, not knowing that he has been seriously considering giving up on life.
You decide to take the first step in reconciling with someone you are at odds with. Your attitude softens her heart, and she begins to realize how her own anger affects her family. She gets help, and their lives change for the better.
You and your spouse decide to start giving a percentage of your paycheck to the Lord’s work, and a man on the other side of the world hears about Jesus as a result.
You’ve been thinking about inviting the neighbor family over for dinner, and today, you decide there are no more excuses. It ends up being the beginning of a transforming relationship that brings multiple people to Christ.
I’ve seen God do it. He takes our small acts of obedience and turns them into small miracles. Try it and see.
“Father, I want to do great things for you. Help me not to miss the opportunities to obey you in things that seem small. I trust you to magnify whatever I give you. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
