Moses is out of reasons why God shouldn’t send him to Egypt. His last objection is pathetic:

13 But he said, “Oh, my Lord, please send someone else.” 14 Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses and he said, “Is there not Aaron, your brother, the Levite? I know that he can speak well. Behold, he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. 15 You shall speak to him and put the words in his mouth, and I will be with your mouth and with his mouth and will teach you both what to do. 16 He shall speak for you to the people, and he shall be your mouth, and you shall be as God to him. 17 And take in your hand this staff, with which you shall do the signs.”

Moses’ Fifth Objection: Send someone else.  In the original Hebrew: “Send, I beg you, by the hand of whom you will send,” which is another way of saying, “Choose anybody other than me, Lord.”  And here we see both the kindness and severity of God.  We see His wrath and His grace.  First the wrath: There are consequences for disobeying God.  For Moses, the consequence was that he would have to share the glory of this monumental task with his brother.  Notice that God calls him “Aaron the Levite.”  The Levites were the tribe of Israel from which came all the priests.  Later, Aaron will become the leader of the Jewish priesthood. Perhaps if Moses had not made so many excuses, he would have had that honor, not his brother.  At the same time, we see grace: God doesn’t give up on Moses.  He essentially says, “No, Moses, you can do this.  But since you don’t trust me, I’ll give you your brother to help you bear the load.”  That seems to have been enough for Moses.

At the start of the week, I said that God’s responses have something in common.  Five times, Moses objected to the plan of God.  Five times, he saw the obstacles instead of the opportunities.  What was God’s answer to each of the objections?  Each time, the answer God gave was Himself.

“I will be with you.”

“I am what I am.”

“I will show my power to the Israelites and the Egyptians.”

“I will give you the words to speak.”

“I will be with you and your brother Aaron.”

The answer to the problems in this world, the solution to our own weakness, is Him. Period.

There was another man who, like Moses, came from nowhere on an insane rescue mission.  But His mission was much harder than that of Moses.  Instead of facing Pharaoh, He had to face down death itself.  Whereas Moses feared he could lose his life, this man knew He would die, and in the most painful and humiliating way possible.  But Jesus didn’t make any excuses.  He felt every bit as much fear as Moses, and more.  But He gave His life anyway.  When our sin left us without hope, He didn’t give us an answer; He became the answer.  And because He went to the cross, you and I are forgiven and free…free to accomplish the good works God prepared beforehand for us to do.

What good works is He calling you to do today, and in the days ahead?  No matter what they are, no matter how scared you feel, obey His call.  He is the answer.  He will be with you.  He will give you the words to say.  He will bless your efforts.  He will bear fruit from your sacrifice.  He will provide for you.  He is…I AM.  Do you believe it?

Today, on our nation’s 250th birthday, I want to close with a stirring version of a song written by a Christian woman seeking freedom for another set of slaves. God delivered them, too. It’s what He does!
