One Sunday evening, two disciples leave Jerusalem, stunned and distraught. A week ago, they saw their Lord joyously welcomed into the city, riding a donkey (as prophesied by Zechariah). But then they saw Him betrayed by one of their own, arrested by thugs, condemned by the leaders of their people, and nailed to a cross by the Romans. All their dreams have failed, and now they’re stumbling in darkness. As they walk, they tell their story to a stranger who happens to be walking the same road. The stranger gently reprimands them, and begins to explain how everything they’ve just experienced was foretold centuries ago. It was all part of God’s plan to rescue us. Christ’s death wasn’t defeat, it was victory. And it wasn’t final, because He’s still alive. They stop for a meal in a little village called Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem, and as they break the bread, they both suddenly recognize that this stranger is Jesus Himself.
When your world grows dark, remember that the One who walks beside you is the One who knows the Way, because He is the Way. He is the One who died to save you, then defeated death itself. You are in good hands.
The darker this world gets, the more we need the words of this old hymn: The Light of the World is Jesus.
