None of the things our flesh desires have the power to sustain our lives. And while blessings like wealth, accomplishments, romantic love, or a happy family are all good things, none of them last forever. They lack the endurance we require.

But most of all, none of these things love you like Jesus does.  In John 6, He says “I am the bread of life” twice. Here’s the second time, in vv. 48-51:

I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.

He’s talking about His own death.  Jesus is putting His own body, His own life, on the line for us.  At the cross, we see these words fulfilled.  He gave up His life to give us life.  No one else does that.  Your job won’t die for you.  Your money and possessions won’t die for you.  Your friends won’t, your coworkers won’t, nor will those people you want so badly to impress.  Perhaps you have a spouse or a child who loves you enough to die in your place, but even that wouldn’t be enough. Only the Son of God is righteous enough to save us, and loves us enough to do it.

He is the bread of life, the only food we really need. If we’re wise, we’ll say, “Lord Jesus, I want to know you better and love you  more.  I realize that, deep down inside, my real problem isn’t my body, or my money, or my career, or my marriage, or my kids.  It’s my sin.  That’s what is separating me from you, and you are the source of life.”  The first time you realize that, and ask Him to be your true bread, that’s the day you’re truly saved.  Has that happened to you yet?  If not, please contact me.

Perhaps you would say, “Yeah, that’s happened to me,” but you would also admit that you’re not experiencing any real victory or joy.  I honestly believe that many Christians are going to stand before the Lord when this life is done, and it’ll be like the day I saw my friend John after getting back from Memphis. He’ll say, “I wanted so much more for you.  Why did you settle for scraps, when I had a feast prepared for you?  Why didn’t you trust me more?”

If you pray for Jesus to change your heart, to make you a person who wants more than anything else to know Him better and love Him more, He will answer that prayer.  That’s what He wants for you, too.  Are you willing to trust Him?  Here’s a song that gives us the perfect words. Sing to Him: Take My Life and Let It Be Consecrated Lord to Thee.
