Making Progress: Part 5
Part 5: Killing the Old Man
Mortification is the word Christians of the past used for shedding old sinful habits so that we can walk in our new life. But how do we do it? Think about the cross (the old you was crucified with Jesus, a new you has risen, per your baptism), see your sin realistically, and don’t envy those who are facing judgement… it’s not freedom they’re experiencing, but death.
Jesus didn’t save us so we could live in survival mode, just hoping to make it through each day. 1 Peter was written to people who, like us, were trying to live for Christ in a culture that thought their faith was irrelevant and ridiculous. It shows us that our relationship with God should produce progress in our lives, which leads to joy… and ultimately changes our culture.
